This paper is intended as a contribution to the analysis of the
\nsemantic field of \u201cprofessional duty\u201d. It will partially explore
\nvarious layers of meaning of the polysemic concept of officium
\n(which can be translated as \u201cduty\u201d, \u201cservice\u201d or \u201coffice\u201d), from
\nLate Antiquity to the Early Modern period, in a number of Latin
\nand Italian sources. In doing so, it will suggest that the
\nreelaboration of the concept of the officium is a condition of
\npossibility of the very concept of \u201cprofessional duty\u201d in itself, and,
\nfor this reason, an essential step in the process of valorizing work
\nand the professions ethically. An analysis of this reelaboration can
\nthus serve to provide important insights into the genealogy of the
