This paper looks at how the objectification of religious imagination
\ninfluences Muslim\u2019s coping of their changing worldly realities. It looks at
\nthe role of new religious intellectuals in addressing the shrinking Muslim
\npresence in the public sphere in urban India through newer styles of
\nreligious leadership embedded in a broader understanding of the religious
\nimagination itself. These new religious intellectuals among the Muslim
\npoor I argue see the role of secular education coupled with a religious
\nimagination as essential in order to protect one\u2019s self interests as a Muslim
\nyet be integral to a larger and diverse public. Islamic knowledge and
\nbehavioural conduct combined with secular education is hence seen as a
\nway of fashioning the lives of the modern Muslim subject. In other words,
\nembracing modernity with Islamic values is seen as a way of refashioning
