Drawing on an analysis of Shi\u2018i ritual lamentation in Lebanon, this article examines\n how religious actors and pious publics employ literary, recitational, \ntheatrical and socio-technological methods to cultivate imaginal \nengagements with the other-worldly. These methods are analysed, \ndemonstrating how they locate pious Shi\u2018is in religious metanarratives \nwhich transcend the linearity of time and take place in the Elsewhere \nand the here-and-now, simultaneously. I argue that this produces \ntransposable and lasting dispositions which constitute the Shi\u2018i self, \nimmerses subjects in this-worldly-oriented modes of religiosity and \nbestows upon Shi\u2018i politics and the imagined community a profound \nemotional legitimacy.
