In this paper I look at how participation in a transnational Islamic \nmissionary movement as well as pious volunteerism during the month of \nRamzan form a significant aspect of the public expressions of Islam and \ncommunity consciousness in a poor Muslim neighbourhood. Public \nexpressions of Islam through acts of charity, construction and \nmaintenance of places of worship and the \u2018public\u2019 observation of days of\n religious significance (since these remain largely confined to the \nboundaries of Muslim localities in the city) not just mark the Muslim \nneighbourhood as a religio-cultural space distinct from the rest of the \ncity but also seek to forge a civic solidarity rooted in ethics and \nfraternity that often transcend neighbourhood boundaries.
