This paper discusses how modes of social coordination can destroy the\n plausibility of egalitarian norms. It focuses on formal organizations \u2013\n more specifically, on political parties \u2013 and on the mechanisms through\n which these organizations can destroy the plausibility of the ideas \nthat they were meant to institutionalize. Its goal is to save some of \nthe insights that can be found in Robert Michels\u2019 Sociology of Political\n Parties (1911\/1924), a now mostly unread \u2018classic\u2019 that, precisely \nbecause of its age, has the advantage of not treating party \norganizations, and the ways in which they typically operate, as a \nnatural fact of social life. Michels\u2019 book remains interesting for its \nethnographic descriptions of everyday micro-practices, and for its ideas\n on how these practices can transform the ways in which party members \nunderstand themselves and their worlds. In order to reconstruct the \nsocial mechanisms that can be found in Michels\u2019 descriptions, this paper\n uses the pragmatist concepts of selective attention, situated \nreflexivity, and social self. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
